Smudging 101: Cleanse your space and lift your spirits

What is Smudging?

‘Smudging’ is the holistic practice of burning bundles of dried Sage or sticks of Palo Santo wood to purify and clear away negative energy.


Smudging plays an important role in Native American spiritual tradition and healing.

It can be used on yourself to cleanse your own aura of any negative energy helping to purify your body and assist you attune to a higher vibrational frequency.

It can also be used to cleanse your home or any space of negative or blocked energy.




When should you Smudge?

Whenever you want to clear away old or negative energy from yourself or your environment and feel refreshed, smudging is ideal. It’s a great ritual :

- When you want to feel more supported and uplifted

- To bring on new beginnings

- When you want to get creative

- Before starting a new job

- Before beginning a new project

- When you move into a new house

- At the end of an old relationship


The Ritual of Smudging

Before you embark on Smudging, its important to set your intention and what you want to achieve. You can sit comfortably and light a candle, breath in and connect with a higher source.

Burning Sage or Palo Santo both have an uplifting aroma that gently heals and cleanses as you breath in their fragrance.


To Smudge using Sage

Light the dried Sage herb smudge stick at one end and let it become a small flame. Gently blow it out until it starts to smoulder. You can then fan the smoke with a feather weaving the billowing smoke around your body or wandering from room to room, allowing the smoke to cleanse the space.

To Smudge using Palo Santo Wood Sticks

Palo Santo is a sacred tree native to South America. Its wood, resin and oil have been traditionally used for healing and in spiritual ceremonies for centuries. It’s known as Holy Wood.


Sit comfortably in a quiet space and set your intention. Light one end of the Palo Santo stick and let it burn for around 30 seconds.


Blow out the flame and allow the smoke to billow as with the sage stick and either weave it around your body or use it to cleanse a room or space.


It is said that the uplifting aroma is perfect for relaxation and meditation. Palo Santo also reduces stress, promotes healing and pain relief and repels mosquitos.


As we grow in consciousness and learn more about energy and spirituality, we are turning back to the rituals of ancient practices and cultures that live closer to the land and the elements.


Smudging and clearing your body and your space from any negative or blocked energy is incredibly purifying, promoting peace, relaxation and a wonderful sense of wellbeing.
